In conversation with Isabel Crook (101 years young (7/2016) talking about her time in China, 1948-9. David and Isabel were among the founding teachers under Ye Jianying for diplomats for the then Foreign Affairs School in 1948 (today known as Beijing Foreign Studies University). While there, the Crooks worked and travelled with the Communist to liberate and teach future diplomats throughout the liberated rural areas. They were attacked by the Guomindang [KMT] under general Fu Zuoyi, but his daughter warned them of coming attacks so Isabel and many others dug trenches and or hid in the mountains.

By January 1949, the KMT Commander General Fu Zuoyi was the commander in Beijing when the Communists besieged the city. He withdrew to the Communist as he could see it was a losing battle and the city would only be destroyed. The CCP liberated Beijing under their government in early in 1949, eight months before the People’s Republic was set up in October.

Absolutely fascinating video memory of modern China 1948-9 from part of Isabel’s 100 year life in China.
