Isabel met David in Chengdu China in 1940 and found purpose and inspiration in communism. After their military service, David and Isabel retuned to China to pursue their commitment to China and communism. David was a journalist and Isabel continued work as an anthropologist. They were invited to take part in the land reform movements of communist liberated areas, were founding teachers for the Foreign Affairs School and went on to distinguished careers at the now Beijing Foreign Studies University.
